I Do Declare!
I Do Declare!
Made from the strongest flight feathers of large birds, the feather quill stood as the uncontested writing implement of the world for over a thousand years. The Magna Carta, drafted to regulate the once absolute rule of the English monarchy and hold the king accountable to the law, was penned by quill. The Constitution of the United States, the document that fashioned American views on individual freedoms and the role of government, was drafted by quill. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was ratified by Congress to declare the United States a free nation. The Declaration encompassed the goals and aspirations of our nation. The Declaration, like so many other historic documents, was transcribed and signed by quill.
Writing provides us with a means to share our ideals, beliefs, and innermost aspirations. We’ve come a long way from chiseling pictures on the walls of stone caves with sharpened rocks. Although the process has quite changed, the reason we write hasn’t. Edward Bulwer composed the famous phrase, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” We write because we have something to say. We write because we want to be heard. We write because we want to change. It’s time to use your words, sharpen your minds, and declare your truths!
