In 1608, well-known spectacle maker Hans Lippershey filed a patent for the earliest known telescope. Named the “looker”, the refracting telescope contained a convex objective lens and a concave eyepiece with the ability to magnify up to 3X. The telescope quickly gained popularity as the capability to magnify with clarity proved useful for many trades. Militaries relied on the spyglass to observe enemies and create effective battle strategy. Sailors and seafarers no longer need rely on the crew member with the sharpest eyes to spot obstacles. Voyaging courses were plot accurately, and sailors were given ample time to maneuver in the event of complications.
Optical instruments designed to make objects appear nearer, telescopes were used to explore the world and study the heavens. They magnify what is real, revealing what might otherwise escape our eyes. Like sailors of old, we must look farther than what is in front of us. To determine the right path, we must discern the destination. See through the haze of the storm. Know that behind the crackle of thunder and flashes of lightning, lies hope. Use your talents and tools to change course. The sea is rough! Be vigilant! Be steadfast! Be unapologetic in your discovery!
